Murph Designalytics: The Art & Science of Murph Shirt Design

What more than a decade of actual Murph T-shirt sales has taught us about what people want to wear, what consistently sells, and why we keep trying to create something nobody has seen before.

Everything Hasn't Been Done

(Challenge Accepted!)

Last year my wife told me she thought everything that could be done with Murph designs had already been done.

That statement stuck with me.

Because proving otherwise is exactly what excites me about getting back into the Design Lab.

Every year brings new technology, different garments, new decoration methods, and new ways to interpret familiar imagery.

American flags may continue to be our biggest sellers. More than a decade of sales has taught us to respect that.

But knowing what works doesn't mean we should stop searching for what's possible.

I don't believe we've even scratched the surface when it comes to Murph designs and engineering great garment options for gyms and groups doing Murph every year.

Every spring we make bets on which Murph designs are going to sell. And after more than 10 years of manually counting the results, we've learned a few things.

Some results are remarkably consistent. Others surprise us. And every year we spend substantial time and resources trying to develop something nobody has done before.

We call the marriage of those two disciplines Murph Designalytics.

It's part sales history, part creative experimentation, and part understanding what actually motivates someone to buy and wear a shirt.

These aren't the results of a controlled scientific study. They're lessons from our own annual sales counts, years of working with gyms nationwide, and the research and development we fund ourselves.

The best Murph shirt isn't necessarily the most elaborate design. It's one that honors the occasion, appeals to your members, and earns a place in their wardrobe long after Memorial Day.

What our sales history tells us

American Flags Win. Every Year.

Of all the Murph design directions we've worked with, the American flag has consistently outsold everything else.

This isn't a hunch. We manually count our Murph design sales every year, and flag-based artwork continues to lead.

Why do we think that happens?

We believe a major reason is wearability beyond the event itself.

A shirt with a very specific workout graphic may only make sense at the gym. An American flag can be worn on the Fourth of July, at a barbecue, or on an ordinary Saturday.

That broader usefulness may explain why these designs perform so consistently well.

The sales result is something we've measured. The reason behind it is our interpretation.

That doesn't mean every gym needs an identical flag shirt.

Distressed, minimal, traditional, geometric, or incorporated into completely different concepts, the flag offers a tremendous amount of creative room.

That's where our Design Lab comes in. We know what sells, but we're constantly searching for fresh ways to interpret it.

Know who you're designing for

Some Designs Have a Smaller Audience.

Camouflage is a perfect example of something that can be enormously appealing to one group and less interesting to another.

We've seen plenty of enthusiasm around camo patterns over the years. But the audience can be considerably narrower than a traditional American flag.

There's nothing wrong with that if you understand your buyers.

A gym with a strong military community may embrace a tactical aesthetic. A gym with a broad mix of members may do better with something more universal.

02

Badges & Shields

Patch-inspired graphics can communicate belonging and provide room for a gym's identity and annual event year.

03

Portraits & Memorials

Artwork centered on Murphy, remembrance, and military service can offer a more personal emotional connection.

A design can be enormously popular with a handful of members and still be a poor choice for an entire gym's merchandise release. Know the difference.

Making the garment personal

Put Their Name on the Back.

Dale Carnegie understood something about people: we all have a special connection to our own names.

We believe that connection works in apparel too.

Consider the difference between an ordinary event T-shirt and one with your own name printed on the back.

One is event merchandise. The other feels like something made for you.

Personalizing individual Murph shirts can add a few dollars to the production cost, depending on the decoration method and quantity.

But we believe that added personal connection can make the garment easier to sell.

Make it theirs.

Offer personalized backs as an optional upgrade. Confirm spelling and placement before production. Names, gym nicknames, and other meaningful details can all work.

The best part is that you don't necessarily need to change the main artwork.

Everyone can purchase the same core design, but each member can make the shirt their own.

Change the Color. Keep the Tradition.

One of the easiest ways to keep members buying Murph shirts year after year is to make each edition look different from the last.

Your Members Already Have Black Shirts.

Black and olive green are natural choices for Murph.

But after five or six years, how many nearly identical black shirts does someone need?

A different garment color can completely change the feel of an annual release.

Sand, natural, steel blue, charcoal, faded red, or something unexpected can make a shirt feel new again.

That variety helps turn an annual purchase into a collection.

And when members continue wearing their older editions, your gym's annual tradition remains visible year-round.

Inside the UNITEE Design Lab

We're Working on Murph Long Before Memorial Day.

Most people probably assume we start thinking about Murph shirts sometime in the spring.

In reality, our research and development may begin as much as 90 days before February.

That's where our Design Lab comes in.

We explore patterns, typography, unconventional decoration methods, and ideas that don't always have an obvious commercial destination.

Sometimes we're so curious about an idea that we'll manufacture a physical prototype just to see what happens.

One example was a special octagon-shaped, black-on-black digital pattern we developed.

It wasn't simply about creating another graphic on a screen. We wanted to explore an entirely different visual treatment.

Over the years, we've developed original patterns, typefaces, and novel effects specifically to debut during Murph season.

We fund this research and development ourselves.

Some concepts become customer favorites. Others may never produce a single order.

That's part of the cost of discovering something new.

For our customers, the benefit is access to an evolving library of creative ideas without having to finance that exploration themselves.

This is why we believe in developing multiple creative directions instead of betting everything on the first attractive idea.

Experimenting with production

Sometimes the Printing Method Is the Design.

Special-effect printing is an area we believe deserves more attention in Murph apparel. A familiar graphic can feel completely different when the decoration technique changes.

Black on Black

Tonal printing can create a restrained, premium appearance using subtle contrast instead of bright graphics.

Whiteout Editions

White garments with white or slightly contrasting decoration can produce an entirely different aesthetic.

Metallic Inks

Metallic effects used selectively on details, typography, or emblems can create an unusual finish.

Mixed Media

Combining compatible printing methods, garment details, or decoration styles can open up new possibilities.

You don't always need completely new artwork to create a new Murph shirt. Sometimes the innovation is in how the design is printed.

Special treatments can affect cost, durability, legibility, and production requirements. We recommend physical samples when testing unfamiliar effects.

Creative technology

Reimagining Murphy's Portrait.

One of the most exciting developments in our Design Lab has been the evolution of Lieutenant Michael Murphy's portrait.

About four years ago, we collaborated with a professional comic book artist to develop a G.I. Joe-inspired, superhero-style illustration of Murphy.

At the time, it represented a major creative leap for us.

Today, technology has dramatically expanded what's possible.

We can explore dynamic compositions, cinematic perspectives, and artistic interpretations that would have required considerably more resources just a few years ago.

Never Quit Never Out A contemporary illustrated portrait interpretation on a coyote brown garment.

Instead of always presenting Murphy in a conventional portrait layout, we can build compositions that bring the viewer closer to the intensity and emotional weight of the story.

Within the military and functional fitness communities, Murphy's face has become a recognizable symbol of sacrifice and remembrance.

That recognition creates an exciting opportunity to explore new visual interpretations.

These are artistic interpretations, not documentary recreations of actual battlefield scenes.

The goal remains to honor the man and his story, while finding new ways to communicate their meaning.

Never lose the meaning

The Story Comes Before the Shirt.

Murph honors U.S. Navy Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, who was killed in Afghanistan during Operation Red Wings on June 28, 2005.

Nineteen American service members lost their lives during the operation. Murphy was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions.

The history behind Murph deserves to be treated with care.

We believe that respectful remembrance and creative experimentation can coexist.

A shirt can be visually unusual, innovative, and commercially successful without losing sight of the people and sacrifices being honored.

Turning ideas into decisions

Our Three-Design Approach.

Rather than presenting several tiny variations of the same design, we like exploring genuinely different creative directions.

01

The Proven Seller

A flag-forward design with broad appeal.

This is where our historical sales results give us the greatest confidence.

02

The Tribute

A portrait, memorial, badge, or meaningful military-inspired composition.

This direction places the history and emotion of the occasion at the center.

03

The Wildcard

New patterns, unusual garment colors, experimental artwork, or novel effects.

It may not be the safest direction. But that's how we discover new possibilities.

Don't only ask which design gets the most compliments. Ask which one people will actually purchase.

If your gym is considering different concepts, show members the choices and collect actual preorder interest.

Comments and votes are useful, but committed orders are stronger evidence of buying behavior.

Keep records of garment colors, artwork categories, personalization choices, sizes, and quantities.

Over time, your gym can build its own understanding of what sells instead of starting from scratch every spring.

Frequently Asked

What type of Murph T-shirt design sells best?

Based on more than 10 years of UNITEE's manually tracked Murph design sales, American flag-based artwork has consistently been our strongest selling direction.

Should our gym use an American flag?

It's an excellent starting point for broad member appeal, but not a requirement. Memorial imagery, badges, camouflage, and experimental concepts may work well for your audience.

Should we change our Murph shirt every year?

We recommend making each edition distinct. New garment colors, artwork treatments, and different creative directions can help build an annual collectible tradition.

Can Murph shirts be personalized?

Yes. Individual names, gym nicknames, and other details can often be added to the back. Additional cost depends on the printing method and quantity.

Does UNITEE create original Murph artwork?

Yes. Our Design Lab develops original concepts, patterns, and printing ideas. We also adapt existing portfolio concepts for individual gyms. Design assistance is included with qualifying orders.

When should we begin planning our Murph shirts?

Start early enough to review designs, collect member sizes, approve artwork, and account for production and shipping. Our standard production time is 9 business days after payment, so allow additional lead time before Memorial Day.
